Sustainable Tour 2012

 

Commiting in a sustainability approach is a long-term process that must be considered in the line of past actions. Our commitment is based on studies that were conducted in collaboration with students from the University of Lausanne that led to the creation of a carbon footprint related to transport of the 2011 edition of our leg of Verbier and to a model of sustainable development strategy which can be applied to our organization.

 

In order to continue in that way and to get more accurate results in terms of our overall impact on the environment, we will again benefit from a study by EPFL students that will lead to a global Ecobilan of the Xtreme Verbier 2012. They will be supervised by Dr. Payet through its research department « Tools For Environment » which provides tools for environment designs softwares solutions for environmental footprinting.

 

We are also pleased to announce the creation of the « Environment Commission of the FWT ». This commission aims to define a strategy for sustainable development and identify key actions to develop. The commission will also aim to bring together key stakeholders with a direct or indirect interest in the implementation and the conduct of this strategy for our organization.

 

For the first season under the banner of « sustainability », we decided to focus our efforts and resources on two main legs, namely Chamonix – Mont-Blanc and Xtreme Verbier. Our strategy for sustainable development is characterized by a number of actions that focus through eight major scopes:

• Waste Management

• Education & Awareness

• Communication

• Internal Management

• Energy

• Food

• Community & Ethics

 

To help us in this task, we have the valuable support of two organizations working for the past 10 years in raising awareness of environmental problems and in promoting sustainable development throughout mountain territories, these are Summit Foundation and Mountain Riders. Both associations support us in implementing the various actions and offer their expertise in how to lead and to plan them on the long term. Summit Foundation is already a longtime partner, we have been working already for 10 years now on our leg of Verbier. The foundation is also behind the « Environment Commission of the FWT» that was created during this season. Mountain Riders will be present through the association but also by the Bureau d’étude Mountain Riders that will give us valuable feedback on how we set up our events.
