ATHLETE SUMMER STORIES PART 2

In our second instalment of athlete summer stories we caught up with Reine Barkered, Núria Castan, Erika Vikander and Cody Bramwell to see how they've been unwinding during the off season.

REINE BARKERED

How have you been keeping yourself entertained post lockdown?

We actually never had a real lockdown in Sweden and since I live in the rural area of the North not much changed. After coming back from the ski season in the Alps we did a lot of touring, winter camping and had a really long season thanks to the good snow year.

What exciting plans have you got lined up for the rest of summer?

I will work on my house, keep active with outdoor activities alongside with training, I don't think I will be traveling too much and that feels kind of nice.

What sport/activity has replaced skiing for summer?

Mountain biking, both downhill and cross country & enduro. I also picked up running again after many years of absence, feels good.

Any highlights or funny moments from the summer you’d like to share?

We had a spontaneous trip up to Riksgränsen above the arctic circle in May, we had no plans or a place to stay so we thought we'll wing it. We got two weeks of some of the best skiing we had in Sweden, we got lucky and were set up in hotel rooms that were free because of cancellations. A few days later we ran into the Red Bull rep and Turdell, they were doing a Heli skiing shoot and asked Jackie and I if we would consider joining. We agreed and ended up doing the biggest runs of the season in perfect powder at the end of May. Best trip in a loooong time.

NÚRIA CASTAN

How have you been keeping yourself entertained post lockdown?

I was finishing my degree of Graphic Design, so actually the lockdown was kind of good for me to have more time for that as I was struggling a little bit with the time. I was located in the Pyrenees in the lockdown so I felt lucky to be there because we had more outdoor activities than people that were unfortunately in the cities. To keep myself entertained I was biking, hiking mountains, climbing and doing via ferratas, as well as finding time to do some gym training and yoga sessions to help my body to come back after lockdown.

What exciting plans have you got lined up for the rest of summer?

I am organising a road trip to go down to the south coast of Spain and Portugal in my van, which i’m pretty excited about as I have never been to these areas. I’m looking forward to getting some surfing in and it will also be nice to explore the areas. I’m also planning to hike some other peaks in the Pyrenees where I will take a tent and my dog Nuk with me, who’s been on so many adventures with me already!

What sport/activity has replaced riding for summer?

I just love outdoors activities in general, it's hard to choose but the main one have been biking, climbing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, hiking, surfing…

Any highlights or funny moments from the summer you’d like to share?

I have so many cool memories of the summer hiking, exploring the mountains… but a very funny moment was when I was walking for a video in one hike and I tried to make it funny and I got stung by a nettle in my leg…

ERIKA VIKANDER

How have you been keeping yourself entertained post lockdown?

I am lucky to live in a place that's really close to nature. I have been able to snowboard at Mt. Hood almost daily, I also just got a mountain bike so I'm trying to not get hurt on that in addition to some new sports I just picked up!

What exciting plans have you got lined up for the rest of summer?

I am hoping to get to Hawaii for some warm water surfing and exploring in August. Aside from that just trying to make every single day the best day ever!

What sport/activity has replaced riding for summer?

Definitely Wakesurfing, so much fun, great workout and low impact!

Any highlights or funny moments from the summer you’d like to share?

The whole summer has been a highlight so far!

CODY BRAMWELL

How have you been keeping yourself entertained post lockdown?

My family has a watersports business on an island in Greece called Ios. So been here since the end of May getting my summer boardsport fix! Windsurfing, surfing, wakeboarding etc!! Very grateful to be able to have this as my routine for the summer and still stay active with all the different types of sports that we can exercise here. It helps with my snowboarding, I have no doubt about it!

What sport/activity has replaced skiing for summer?

I'll probably be here all summer long, wanted to head over to New Zealand for a couple of weeks in August to get some snowboarding in, but sure doesn't look promising courtesy of Covid-19. Planning to make something to showcase a bit what we do here on a daily basis. Just trying to convince a filmer of mine to come over when the borders are fully open again! Stay tuned for some rowdy summer activities!

What sport/activity has replaced riding for summer

Windsurfing, surfing, wakeboarding and a new thing is spearfishing, I'm hooked!

Any highlights or funny moments from the summer you’d like to share?

My highlight has been that I've managed to score surf a few times a week. In Greece that is no small feat, its messy, its windy, its small, but stoked to still be able to get out there!

As the summer months begin to unwind and with September closing in on us it won't be long before our athletes switch their wakeboards/surf boards for skis and snowboard with preparations for winter just around the corner!
