Three New Events Highlight Andes FWQ series for 2017

Local and regional organizers partner with Freeride World Tour to create comprehensive Freeride World Qualifying (FWQ) tour in South America

Freeride Sudamerica in conjunction with Freeride Chile and Freeride Argentina with the support of the Freeride World Tour are proud to announce a full slate of Freeride World Tour (FWQ) events in the Andes for 2017. This exciting development marks a turning point in freeride skiing and snowboarding opportunities for athletes in the region and lays the foundation for future growth of the sport across one of the most impressive mountain ranges in the world, the Andes.

In Chile, Freeride Chile is hosting three new competitions as part of the Freeride Chile championship series, while in Argentina, last year’s 2* FWQ event at Chapelco returns for another year. With a coordinated schedule that allows for rational travel between events, 2017 should be one of the best years yet for freeriding in the Andes region.

We’re very excited about the developments in the Andes,” says Freeride World Tour South America Advisor Tom Winter. “With a national series of events in Chile and the return of the Chapelco Back Bowls 2* event, this season is poised to be a fantastic year for freeriding in South America. The team at Freeride Sudameria has worked closely with both Freeride Chile and Freeride Argentina to create a comprehensive schedule of events that will become the foundation for future competition seasons in the Andes.

This year’s schedule kicks off with a 2* event at Nevados de Chillan from August 10-13. This wild and unique ski area is one of the best for freeriding in Chile, with open bowls, cliffs and playful terrain nestled against the flanks of the active volcano that the ski area takes its name from. With steaming fumaroles and hot springs hidden in Araucaria forests, it’s a not-to-be-missed destination that is sure to bring unforgettable memories for all who compete.

The next FWQ event is at the remote Antillanca volcano in Southern Chile on August 17-19. Located in Chile’s Puyehue national park and approximately 98 kilometers from the scenic town of Osorno, the area around Antillanca is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Chile, surrounded by native forests punctuated by volcanoes and lakes. The ski resort itself has a ski domain of more than 900+ acres of terrain, served by 5 lifts and featuring 14 trails with a total of length of 35 kilometers. But it’s the off-piste terrain here that will appeal to freeriders: the open powder fields, natural wind lips and spectacular hike-to terrain is some of the best in all of Chile.

After Antillanca the Argentine ski area of Chapelco welcomes the athletes. Now in its second year, the Chapelco Back Bowls 2* FWQ event (August 31 – September 3) hosts competitors at the beautiful town of San Martin de los Andes nestled below the rolling, playful terrain of Chapelco ski resort. This event, taking place on the ski-in but hike-out Back Bowls sector of Chapelco, features a venue that is one of the best in South America, with numerous line choices, plenty of opportunities for air and an excellent south facing exposure that shelters powder long after storms.

The tour returns to Chile for the final FWQ event of the season, on August 24-27 date at Correlco. Located high on the slopes of the volcano Lonquimay, Correlco is a legendary freeriding zone, with massive bowls, long ridges and plenty of ski touring and ski mountaineering opportunities including climbs above the ski area to the summit of the Lonquimay volcano itself. This spectacular location should provide a fitting finale to the season.

We’re really excited about the events this year,” says Freeride Chile’s Fernando “Focha” Ochagavia. “We’ve spent two years working with resorts to develop a series of events at unique venues throughout the Andes. These new events in Chile coupled with the return of a great competition in Chapelco make this a season not to be missed for anyone with passion for freeride.
